Banking Reform - Protecting Depositors: a discussion paper

The Chancellor of the Exchequer has announced today, in an oral statement to Parliament, the publication by HM Treasury, the Financial Services Authority and the Bank of England, of a discussion paper taking forward his commitment to reform the framework to protect depositors. This discussion paper seeks views on the outcomes that any new framework should be designed to achieve.

The publication of the discussion paper represents the first stage of engaging with stakeholders and, informed by the responses to this paper, the Government intends to follow up with a consultation document in early 2008.

Comments on the issues raised in the discussion paper are welcome by 5 December 2007.

Please send responses to banking.reform@hm-treasury.gov.uk or by post to Banking Reform discussion responses, Banking Reform Team, HM Treasury, 1 Horse Guards Road, London, SW1A 2HQ.
