On 9 May 2011, the EU adopted Council Regulation (EU) No 442/2011 which imposed asset freezing measures on certain persons identified as being responsible for the violent repression of the civilian population in Syria. The scope of the measures were subsequently widened to also cover natural or legal persons and entities associated with them.
The EU restrictive measures are currently implemented by Council Regulation (EU) No 36/2012 of 18 January 2012 which repealed and replaced Regulation 442/2011.
