Opposition costings

24 December 2009

Text of request

The costings work of opposition parties policies that has been carried out by HM Treasury or other government departments since May 2009.

Text for disclosure

Four relevant pieces of work have been identified, carried out between September and December and these are disclosed. A prior disclosure on 16 September covered costings work for twelve months to August 2009.

Note on the Council Tax costing below: the Treasury prepared estimates of the cost to central Government of providing every council with top-up funding to pay for council tax increases. This costing considered only the direct costs of providing a top-up, assumed to be equivalent to a 2.5% increase in band D bills across England. The costing did not state the consequential impact on council tax benefit payments. The third paragraph of 'Current council tax projections' should therefore read as: "All figures are shown gross of council tax benefit (DWP AME). If council tax increases are lower than forecast this will result in less council tax benefit being paid out than currently forecast."
