Balance of competences review

Assessing the EU’s impact on the UK: a review of the balance of competences

The Government is carrying out a review of the balance of competences between the EU and the UK. This is an audit of what the EU does and how it affects the UK. You can read more about it on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office website (opens in new browser window).

The Treasury will lead on taxation in the first semester (autumn 2012 - summer 2013), internal market: capital and EU budget in the third semester (autumn 2013 – spring 2014) and Economic and Monetary Union in the fourth semester (spring – autumn 2013).

We have now launched the call for evidence on taxation, which sets out the balance of competence on taxation and includes a series of broad questions to help shape contributions from interested parties.  The evidence received (subject to the provisions of the Data Protection Act) will be published alongside the final report in June 2013 and will be available on the HM Treasury and Foreign and Commonwealth Office websites.

Anyone wishing to contribute to the review is asked to send their written views before 22 February 2013 to BalanceofCompetences@hmtreasury.gsi.gov.uk.
