Latest News

As announced in the Queen’s Speech on 9 May, a Bill will be introduced in this parliamentary session to implement changes to public service pension provision. The changes will be in line with the Final Proposed Agreements for the three largest unfunded schemes published in March.

Work continues with trades unions and other representatives to finalise the designs of the other schemes. Further information on these final scheme designs and confirmation of when the Bill will be introduced to Parliament will follow in due course.

Background to the final designs for the four largest public service pension schemes and the key features of the Firefighters’ scheme

The Government set out its preferred scheme design, based on the recommendations of the Independent Public Service Pensions Commission, led by a former Work and Pensions Secretary Lord Hutton. Trades unions were invited to suggest changes to the Government’s preferred scheme design to ensure it best meets the needs of its members, within the cost ceilings set by the Government (for the four largest schemes on 2 November 2011 and for the Firefighters’ scheme on 7 December 2011).

Following discussions with trades unions schemes submitted their preferred designs to the Government for approval. The Proposed Final Agreements for the NHS, Civil Service and Teachers’ schemes and the Heads of Agreements for the Firefighters’ scheme can be found on the relevant scheme website.
