18 June 2007

(1977-1981 and 1990-present)

This data set details amounts of currency intervention undertaken by the UK government for the periods 1977-1981 and 1990-2006; in US dollars for the 1977-81 period and both dollars and local currency for the 1990-06 period. Only transactions that were undertaken with the intention of influencing exchange rates are included. The UK government currently has a policy of letting the value of sterling be freely determined by market conditions, and does not intervene in foreign exchange markets. Explanatory notes are included in the spreadsheet.
